If something discombobulates you, it makes you really confused or embarrassed, so you suddenly don't know what to do or say, or what the heck is going on at all—and you look really stupid or foolish!
"Discombobulate" is a funny, silly word that arose as slang only a couple hundred years ago. It's a pretty new word. We sometimes make silly new words by sticking "bob" into them, because it sounds funny, as in "thingamabob" and "jiggumbob." Why is the syllable "bob" so funny? I don't know! It just is!
Anyway, we probably invented the word "discombobulate" by sticking a "bob" and some other silly syllables into a more serious word that means the same thing, like "disconcert."
Here's George, who got all discombobulated and crashed his car after his friend moved one of the car's rearview mirrors.
And here's Terry, who got all discombobulated when his colleague came in to talk with him, then immediately left, shouting "Don't follow me!" for no apparent reason.
So, describe someone as discombobulated when they're freaking out because they're totally confused.
And if something is so confusing that it totally freaks you out, call it discombobulating. Here's a discombobulating scene from the original Batman. What in the actual heck is happening here? Is shark repellant a real thing? Why is the shark so small and glossy? I'm discombobulated by this scene.
