When you have to do something, but you don't want to, then you do it reluctantly: you do it in a slow, unhappy, unwilling way.

So, when you feel reluctant, you feel unwilling and unhappy about doing something. And reluctance is a feeling of NOT wanting to do something.

Early in the morning, when it's time to get up, if your room is dark and chilly but your bed is warm and cozy, you're probably reluctant to get up. You have to get up, but you really, really don't want to, so you get up reluctantly: slowly and unhappily.

Now imagine it's really late at night, and you and your cousins are still awake, laughing and having lots of fun. Your parents come in and say, "Don't you think it's bedtime?" You know it is bedtime, but you don't want to go to bed. Your voice is full of reluctance as you say, "Uh... I guess... yeah."

Isn't that funny? Sometimes we're reluctant to get IN bed, and other times we're reluctant to get OUT of bed! We just feel reluctant whenever we know we should do something, but we don't want to.

Sometimes I'm reluctant to try new foods. How about you? I know I probably should give them a try, but what if they taste bad? What if the texture is gross? It's rude to spit food out, so what do I do if I hate it? I bet you understand my reluctance!
