To wince is to make a quick, sudden squeezing movement with your face or your body, showing that you're suddenly hurting, embarrassed, afraid, grossed out, or otherwise uncomfortable.
I wince when I get a papercut. My eyes squeeze shut, and I wrinkle my nose. I'm wincing in pain. I'd also wince if I stubbed my toe, or if my stomach suddenly cramped up.
If you're about to bite into your pizza, but you see there's a fly sitting right there on your slice, you might wince in disgust. And if you just gave a wrong answer in class, or if you just spilled your drink in front of your friends, you might wince in embarrassment. I would!
Remember: when something suddenly hurts you, embarrasses you, or freaks you out, you might wince, pulling away and tightening up your face as if to protect it.
Idea 1: "I winced as (something suddenly hurt me)."
Idea 2: "When (something gross, scary, painful, awkward, or embarrassing happened), (someone) winced in (disgust, fear, pain, or embarrassment)."
